Accessibility First Program

About MaxHousing's Accessibility First Program

The Accessibility First Program emphasizes that, for people with mobility disabilities, their housing must first be accessible. If they don’t have that, the housing simply doesn’t work.

MaxHousing recognizes that, in designing and building housing, accessibility needs to be thought of first, not at the end of the process. Taking an accessibility first approach to housing is about prioritizing it in the design process from the start. Accessibility is a fundamental value of MaxHousing and prioritizing it at the outset ensures that designs meet the needs of all potential residents, including those with disabilities. That results in more accessible, less costly housing for everyone in our community.

Given the shortage of accessible housing, it is vital that existing accessible housing be filled with people who will benefit from the accessibility features. This program will identify accessible housing in the community and work with property managers to ensure they first fill any accessible vacancies with people with disabilities.

Our Program Priorities Include:

Accessible Housing Connector

Connecting individuals in need of accessible housing with accessible units through our Housing Connector.

Demonstration Unit Tours for Individuals and Small Groups

The Accessibility First Demonstration Unit is located within our Cotman Vistas building. It is full of ideas on how anyone can make their home more accessible and ready for aging in place.

Advocating for More Accessible Units and Funding for Home Modifications

Collaborate with housing developers, funders, including government, and others concerned about this shortage of accessible housing to address the need through new construction and home modifications.

The Accessibility First Program is generously supported by donors and sponsors.
